October 10, 2012

I have an exciting product to share with you, that recently hit the shelves at Generation Green!

[Drum Roll Please]

Introducing….Three Farmers Camelina Oil!

Three Farmers Camelina Oil

Three Farmers Camelina Oil is fairly new to the market, however Camelina oil has been a part of the European diet for thousands of years.

So what exactly is Camelina oil?

Camelina oil is produced from the seeds of the camelina sativa plant. The plant is grown in southern Saskatchewan.

The seeds are cold pressed to extract the oil, with no chemicals being used in the process.

Camelina oil is an excellent source of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturates, and rich in Vitamin E, which are essential to a heart healthy diet.

It’s due to the oil’s high concentration of Vitamin E, that this oil is not only shelf stable, but unlike other oils can be heated up to 475 degrees fahrenheit, without the nutrients breaking down.

Camelina oil has a pleasant, nutty aroma, and is great for sautéing, baking, as well as dressings.

Some interesting facts:

Industrialized agriculture began to produce large quantities of hydrogenated canola oil, so farmers stopped growing camelina sativa.

The demand for camelina oil began to fade due to its high levels of unsaturated fat, which made it too difficult to hydrogenate to produce margarine.

Fortunately, the demand for local, and healthier food has put camelina oil back on the market!

Camelina oil has also been used as a replacement for petroleum oil in pesticide sprays.

A little about Three Farmers:

Three Farmers is a small group of Saskatchewan farmers, who grow the camelina sativa plants, and produce the oil at a local facility in southern Saskatchewan.

Each bottle has a code that allows customers to trace their bottle of oil to the exact field the seed came from, and even find out about the farmer that grew the seeds.

Three Farmers Camelina oil has just introduced two flavor infused oils: Roasted Garlic and Chili, and Roasted Onion and Basil.

You can read more on their website here at threefarmers.ca. or tune in to Dragon’s Den, Wednesday, October 10that 8PM central time on CBC TV, to see Three Farmers pitch to the dragons!

Three Farmers Camelina Oil is a great addition to any kitchen. It’s definitely my “go to” cooking oil.

I love that it’s full of nutrients, and also knowing I am supporting Saskatchewan farmers.

Here’s to your health!
