What inspired you to start making Mama Pacha?
I have been making herbal products for a lot of my life, since my teen years. I have always been interested in plants and how they can be used as medicine. I first started making products mainly because my dad was really suffering with arthritis and I wanted to help in any way I could. I started experimenting with herbs and applications and came up with my Joint and Muscle Salve and that’s when things really took off. Mama Pacha officially became a business about 5 years ago when it became clear that there was a larger demand for my products. I was also getting so many requests for items and I couldn’t just keep up making them on the spot for people. It’s been an amazing ride so far with lots of exciting things on the horizon.
Which product is your personal favourite?
This is a hard question because I have so many favorites but the one I use every single day is the sensitive skin deodorant. That is always on my body. Well, that and the mojito lip balm. I can’t be without either of those 2 but there are so many more that I love.
What’s your favourite ingredient to use in your skin care, and why?
While it’s hard to narrow it down to just one, a common theme in my skin care products would be organic calendula. I use organic dried calendula for all of its amazing properties for the skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is antiseptic. Historically it has been used for everything from treating acne to soothing skin irritation and inflammation. It’s a pretty amazing plant. Depending on which oil I infuse those properties into, well, the possibilities become endless.
Why is Mama Pacha different?
I think Mama Pacha is different because I have been at this for a long time. I have been learning and experimenting with ingredients and recipes for decades (man I feel old saying that lol, I actually counted to make sure ha ha). I love educating others as well and love giving workshops. I can’t wait to teach more people in the coming year. I also try to work with local sources as much as possible for everything from herbs and beeswax, to my labels and container suppliers. I really believe that keeping money in Manitoba is important and supporting small businesses is essential.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in developing your product
There have been challenges for sure along the way. From sourcing quality, raw materials to my own product legislation and health Canada guidelines, this business always keeps me on my toes, however I think one of the biggest, if not the biggest challenge is focusing my excitement (ha ha). There are times when I am taking a herbal course or doing research that I have 15 new ideas jump into my head and I want to try them all! Trying to think as a business and narrow it down to products that both excite me and make sense from a business stand point would be a challenge for sure.
What’s your favourite thing about Manitoba?
Oh man, well, I am a prairie girl through and through. I love all the amazing talent that we have here in Manitoba. Seriously, from artists to musicians to chefs and entrepreneurs, we have a province that is bursting with talent! There’s great diversity and we get to learn about our history and that of others. It’s also a province of colour, from the prairie skies to the beautiful lakes to all the native plants we have here, what’s not to love!
