I’m a huge fan of Dragons Den & Shark Tank but I’m a bigger fan of local, so when there is a local event similar to my favourite show I’m there!
The Great Manitoba Food Fight takes place once a year, and features local food and beverage entrepreneurs presenting their products before a panel of judges hoping to come away with one of three monetary prize awards to further develop their product.
This year’s event was on September 20th, 2017 at De Luca’s and featured 10 food developers and 3 beverage developers. I’m always reminded at these events just how difficult it is to develop a product from concept to market.
I have enormous respect for the passion these developers have and the determination to get to the end goal! It’s not as simple as have a recipe, make it, place it in a container and then everyone will buy it. There is a huge financial commitment to begin and then a whole lot of work to create a brand following. From shelf studies to packaging to marketing, the costs really add up, so a competition like the Manitoba Food Fight can be a real asset in moving the tasks along. The Gold prize package is valued at $13,000, Silver Package $7000 & the Bronze $4000
After each of the competitors have presented their product pitch, the distinguished panel of judges have an opportunity to sample the product and then to ask the developer questions. This part is crucial because they need to hear that you’ve done your research, know your market and margins! They will also give feedback on possible changes they see necessary or marketing and packaging suggestions.
This is a whole day when you have 13 presentations but the reward is the evening reception where we now get to sample, talk to the developers and then hear the winners announced. I feel it’s so important that we support our Manitoba developers and as a retailer, when I have opportunities like this one to get to hear their story, I can’t help but want to help them in any small way I can, hence the reason Generation Green is filled with so many amazing local products!
Congratulations to this years winners! Taking the Gold was Little Bones Wings, Silver went to Piccola Cucina, and the Bronze to Mr. Biltong Jerky. In the Beer/Spirits category Capital K Distillery was the winner.
