Movember is a month known to focus on men’s health. Specifically prostate, testicular cancer, and mental health. Men shave their facial hair and then grow out a mustache to raise money and create awareness for these issues.
At Generation Green, we play a part in calling attention to these matters, and specifically to the prevention of them. Our retail platform is a great way we can contribute to the prevention of health issues. We decided to create a calendar featuring locally bearded Winnipegers, in which we’ll donate a portion of the profits from to the Movember Foundation Canada.
“A Year Of Beards 2017” will be released at our Beard & Brawn in-store line launch party on Saturday, November 19th from 12 p.m. -3 p.m. The calendar will retail for $20 with a portion of the profits donated to the Movember Foundation Canada. For every purchase of the calendar, you can be entered to win a our grand prize of a bicycle from White Pine Bicycle Co.! We hope you will join us in supporting this cause.
Movember Foundation Canada is tacking men’s health issues on a global scale by collaborating with experts around the world, and funding programs that offer resources, education and solutions. The Movember Foundation has funded over 1200 programs in 21 countries! You can read more about their mission and how you could help on their website here.

November is a lovely month full of university midterms…That leaves me with late nights, early mornings, and minimal time to prepare lunch for myself on a regular basis. This usually results in me eating grapes, carrots, or dates constantly throughout the day. Being as waste free as possible though, packing these up in a zip lock bag for school would just not be cool.
Colibri re-usable snack bags are certainly my go-to. They are the perfect size for snacks, fruits, or veggies. They are super quick just to grab in the morning and zip up (no complicated plastic zippy top). And have a waterproof inside. So I can put wet or dry foods in there, and at the end of the day just flip it inside out and give it a wipe clean on the inside, and boom, good-to-go for tomorrow. These are seriously rad and they come in like, a ton of different patterns and sizes-come check them out!
For November I chose our very own line of shampoo as my staff pick. The Generation Green line manufactured by Di erbe Inc. essential oil blend shampoo was quite the little lifesaver for me this past month. Maybe it was because of my gruelling University schedule that I was falling asleep in the shower and possibly forgetting to actually wash my hair, or maybe the shampoo I was using ran out of steam, regardless… my hair was greasy (I couldn’t even pull it off as just really, really shiny). I was so fed up with my extra shiny hair that I came in to work on a day off just to pick out a new shampoo.
Thankfully, I fell in love with GG’s own after the first use as it left my hair soft, lightly naturally scented and most importantly, clean. You can’t get much better than a shampoo (also available in conditioner, body wash, and hand lotion in unscented and essential oil blend) that is locally made, contains no funny sounding/impossible to pronounce/unpleasant ingredients (foaming agent free! Woo!) AND refillable. I’m so excited that this shampoo is now a part of my life, bring in a little (or big) container or purchase a convenient pre-filled plastic bottle at Generation Green to try it out for yourself!

This month, my staff pick is one of my favourite Made in Manitoba Products– Gorp Bars!
These bars make the cut for so many reasons. They are made without the use of fake sugars, preservatives, fillers or colouring. They also don’t use high fructose corn syrup and I guarantee you can read and pronounce every ingredient listed on the back of the package. They are packed with nuts, seeds, and oats which are great for heart health as well as long-lasting energy, not to mention flax and hemp containing omega-3’s and tons of fiber.
I love taking them hiking, eating them before or after a soccer game, or anything in between. They are a healthy and convenient energy food that tastes amazing!
Gorp also commits to give 10% of their net profits to third-world agricultural initiatives and children’s aid programs which is super cool. You can find all three flavours (Cocoa, Hemp & Almond, Peanut Butter & Apple, and Peanut Butter & Raspberry) here at Generation Green. Sold individually or in cases of 16.
I love to burn candles, and one of my favourite moments is when I can curl up with a book, a good cup of tea, and enjoy the warmth a candle creates.
I personally will only use clean burning candles, and my favourite would be Barletta Beeswax candles. Not only are beeswax candles clean burning (no black smoke here), they also act as an air purifier and can rid the air of dust, odors, molds, viruses and environmental toxins. I also love the scent that beeswax candles offer, which was surprising to me due to the fact that I easily can get headaches from scents, but this is a scent that is created naturally from the beeswax.
Barletta Beeswax candles are made with 100% Manitoba beeswax, they are hand poured & dipped and available in over 75 different shapes and sizes! My personal favourite is the mason jar candle that Barletta Beeswax created as a memorial fundraiser candle, for our staff member that we tragically lost. All the profits from these candles go to the University of Winnipeg Amy Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund, and have quickly become known as the “Amy Candle”.
We have just celebrated our 3rd Anniversary at the Forks and were going to just let it slide by but I couldn’t just do that!
I practice gratitude on a daily basis and Generation Green is something I say thanks for each and every day. I am so fortunate to have a job I love, amazing customers that have been so loyal and supportive, and the best team of staff that I can totally depend on! Those are all great reasons in my opinion to celebrate!
So we have decided to have a little fun by offering select items that will be discounted at the till. All the items that have a green dot on them will be part of the discount. When you come to cash out, you will draw a ticket that will then give you your discount. This can be anywhere from 15-50% off the regular price and you could even draw a “FREE” ticket which would mean all of those items are free!
The event is for the entire week of October 19th-25th or until we run out of green dot items 😉
Nolan & Jennifer’s Pick – Little Green Pouch & ChooMee Sip’in Soft Top
Nolan: Kermit the Frog says “it’s not easy being green” but I have to disagree with my Sesame Street friend on this one because I LOVE my little green pouch. Mommy knows I’m a growing baby, who gets grumpy [instantly] when I’m hungry! I’ve heard my parents use the term ‘hangry’ to describe this feeling of mine. I also have zero coordination with putting food in my mouth (what I’m a baby?) And since Mommy likes to keep me clean and dry, she started giving me the ‘little green pouch’ for all of my yogurt and pureed snacks. And to top it off [no pun intended], she puts a ‘ChooMee Sip’in top’ on the pouch, so my food doesn’t spill out everywhere! This soft top also feels reallllly nice on my gums when I’m teething – which lately has been feeling like forever. I’ve been using these little green godsends since the day I could hold my own bottle.
Jennifer: Before having a baby, there seemed to be a ‘buzz’ among the parent world that these little pouches were awesome. Now that I have a baby, I totally understand everyone’s excitement and I can’t say enough good things about the ‘little green pouch’ AND the ‘ChooMee Sip’in top’. The two products work amazingly together!
They are reusable. And the seal on the top of the pouch is strong, and doesn’t become less effective over time.
They never stink. From time to time I have left a pouch in my purse, Nolan’s bag, car, etc. with little bits of leftover food and it never held onto the smell.
They are dishwasher safe. Although I prefer to wash them in hot soapy water, and rinse them under the tap.
They keep your baby or child happy and quiet. If Nolan is fussy, he immediately calms down holding his green pouch. He associates the pouch with something delicious inside, and gets excited when I give him one. We recently traveled to Spain, and these pouches came in handy on the plane, train, his stroller, everywhere! I also use them at home every single day.
And of course, no nasty chemicals are used in creating the pouches or tops.
The accessories from the company are a little disappointing in my opinion. Unnecessary baby stuff is wasteful to your wallet, and the environment. Stick to the pouches, and add the ChooMee Sip’in tops. In my opinion, you can’t have one without the other!
Whatever was going around this month was not pleasant…
The other week I came down with a brutal cold and congestion. Thank goodness I had a bottle of peppermint essential oil lying around cause it was my best friend.
Peppermint has tons of health benefits and is really good for pain relief (headaches, muscles), but what really helped me out was the sinus relief. I was spraying it, diffusing it, and constantly inhaling it. Honestly nothing cleared up my sinuses like it. It was such a relief to take a deep breath when I had my peppermint oil around. My favorite was to drop it on a tissue and then dab it under my nose so I could keep breathing it in. It was serious relief!
Peppermint essential oil is also good for increasing concentration and alertness, as well as for nausea and motion sickness.
As Savannah mentioned, there definitely has been some kind of virus whirling around Winnipeg! Everyone is either complaining of a sore throat, head cold, congestion, cough or all of the above! My tried and true recommendation is Oil of Oregano. Everyone seriously needs to have this as a staple in their med cabinet.
Joy of the Mountains is my trusted source, (one of the first Canadian brands). They offer quality assurances and rigorous batch testing in order to offer a product that is 4x more effective than other brands. Oil of oregano is great for digestive, respiratory and immune support just to name a few.
For those of you that have never heard of or used oil of oregano, it is a must have herbal remedy! Oil of oregano has powerful antimicrobial benefits that can help fight off infections, and offers antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. A few drops under your tongue a couple of times a day (warning it does taste awful), or you can dilute in juice. If neither of those appeal to you, they now offer vegetarian oil filled capsules. In addition to the oil of oregano, Joy of the Mountains also has a great line just for pets called OregaPet.
For this month, I picked another magical multi-use product that I just can’t get enough of. Certified Fair trade and now refillable here at Generation Green, Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap is one of absolute favorites. I use mine for hand soap, dish soap, and sometimes….when I’m feeling real lazy I’ll bring it into the shower and wash my hair and body with it. But the magic doesn’t stop there! Use it as a face wash, laundry soap, fruit/veggie rinse, baby wash, or even shaving cream!
Try it out for yourself by purchasing a brand spanking new bottle in store or bring an empty container you have lying around and we’ll fill it up with your favorite scent (available in unscented, peppermint, lavender, and citrus in bulk) at $1/ounce.
Now that the school year is well underway, I don’t ever (and I mean NEVER) take the time to do my hair in the morning. Soooo it seems appropriate for me to choose Watuko Headgear as my pick this month! This multifunctional headwear is more oftenthan not my solution to a bad hair day.The company was established in 2011 and all designing and manufacturing is done in Canada– yay! Their vision also includes working exclusively with companies of integrity and companies who uphold the responsibilities of social wellness for their employees- double yay! By using bamboo for their products, they have created something that is comparable to the softness of silk (since bamboo fibers are naturally smoother and rounder with no sharp spurs to irritate the skin). This makes the fabric hypoallergenic and perfect for anyone who experience allergic reactions to other natural fibers such as wool or hemp.
Bamboo is also antibacterial and antifungal and extremely breathable. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is covered with micro-gaps giving the fabric better moisture absorption and ventilation. As a result, it is able to keep the wearer almost two degrees cooler in the heat and noticeably warmer in the cold. This makes the headgear great for all season wear! These headbands can be worn for style points, exercising in and outdoors, or just for comfort. Bamboo is also the most renewable resource on our planet yayayayya!
Lots of people ask about how to wash their Watuko headgear: they can be washed with nearly everything. However, for the best maintenance treat them as special garments. This means using the gentle cycle, cold or luke warm water, and line drying is preferred. Machine drying may cause the garment to lose its shape or slightly shrink in size. Come by Generation Green to check out the many colours and patterns we have in stock!
There’s nothing I’d rather be using as my makeup remover, face moisturizer, toothpaste, body butter AND cooking oil. Coconut oil truly rocks my world. Many (like myself way back when) think that coconut oil will have negative impacts on their health due to it’s high level of saturated fats. This however could not be further from the truth! The saturated fats in coconut oil are Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) and are metabolized differently than the saturated Long Chain Triglycerides you would find in meats or cheeses. MCTs are digested by saliva and gastric juices and are then absorbed directly from the intestines into the portal vein. After this they head over to the liver where they are used as a quick source of energy. Very little, if any MCTs are stored as fat.
So not to worry! You no longer have to think coconut oil is the enemy!! But asides from being loaded with essential fatty acids coconut oil has literally hundreds of uses all of which have fabulous results for your hair, skin and health! Use it as a hair mask, sunscreen, lotion, makeup remover (this is my favourite use… it seems like absolute magic), lubricant, cooking oil, mouthwash (great for oil pulling), diaper cream, lip balm, coffee creamer, shoe shiner, deodorant and more!
If you haven’t discovered coconut oil… well I’m very excited for you to unearth all of it’s glory. If you are thinking of purchasing coconut oil ensure that you pick up a cold-pressed, unrefined, organic one. If you’re into supporting sustainable business practices or just want to look out for your fellow human being, find a fair trade one (we carry Level Ground’s Direct Trade coconut oil!!).
I hope you all can find happiness in this wonderful product of coconuts!
Ana’s Pick – Coffee Sock
A couple months ago my pick for the month was coffee! And I rambled on about how much I loved it (and maybe came off as a bit obsessed with it). Anyways, this month I pick the Coffee Sock- another product that I use almost daily in order to brew that always satisfying cup of Kicking Horse.
There are quite a few reasons why I love the Coffee Sock. They are made in Austin, Texas from organically grown and untreated cotton. In addition to that, they are sewn by people who are making a fair and living wage (awesome!). The company is family owned and has been operating since 2011. They have a variety of products for hot brew and cold brew (although I have yet to venture into the wonderful world of cold brew).
By using the coffee sock instead of conventional, disposable filters, I have cut down my kitchen waste… a lot. You also don’t have to worry about that terrible moment when you open to pantry to an empty bag of coffee filters… The filters come in packs of two and they are also super easy to care for, just rinse with water and toss in your drying rack. You can even save your coffee grinds to make face or body scrubs! Come check out our stock at Generation Green so you can brew an ethical, environmentally friendly, and totally delicious cup of joe!
Sherry’s Pick – Radius Source Recycled Toothbrush
The Source Toothbrush is the best toothbrush I have ever purchased! When we first opened the store a customer recommended them to me, and have been stocking them ever since! This ergonomically designed brush leaves your mouth feeling amazingly clean and you get this bonus massage for your gums. The wide headed brush is loaded with these soft, fanned out bristles (which are 100% vegetable based nylon for a petroleum free option), and the slim neck allows you to reach into tight spaces.
Now for the really cool part…1) The handles are reversible, so that’s a bonus for lefties like me! 2) They are made from repurposed & recycled materials – like wood, paper and even money! 3) You don’t throw away the whole toothbrush, instead you just replace the head. The brush comes with an extra head and then you can purchase packages of just the heads which means less waste! yeah!
Source brushes are BPA Free, Latex Free, Phthalate Free, Vegan & Made in USA.
Savannah’s Pick – Ganesha’s Garden Incense
Soooo I just recently moved out into my own place, which excitingly means living by my own rules… and by that I mean burning incense daily!
Burning incense in my apartment provides me great joy and peacefulness. It really sets a lovely mood and environment. It gets even better… At GG we sell natural Ganesha’s Garden incense! Conventional incense is often made with who-knows-what ingredients (sometimes meaning leftover animal by-product shiz) and scented with fragrance oil. This is not only awful for the environment but the fragrance oils are not good for you. Tons of people react to them and they can cause headaches and dizziness. Oh AND the who-knows-what ingredients often burn off black and smoky causing damage to your walls!! The beautiful part about ganesha incense is that none of these factors are relevant. The sticks are made with bamboo and hardwood shed – totally environmentally friendly. Scents used are purely essential oil – totally gentle. And they burn a beautiful light-smoky grey, causing no damage. (And it’s 15 cents a stick so like, why not?!) This is definitely why Ganesha incense qualifies as my favourite product this month.
Just recently I tried out my first cup of certified organic and wildly harvested Canadian chaga tea from Annanda Chaga, and well…. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I’ve never tasted a tea so truly earthy before (I guess I’m pretty bad at describing tastes… but it was wicked).
I never was a huge tea drinker, it had always just tasted like watered down nothingness to me, but after I made a commitment to quit caffeine I needed something other than hot lemon water to keep me lovin life. So I tried various caffeine free, organic and fair trade teas but found nothing I fell in love with. I’m not saying I’m in LOVE with chaga just yet, but I’m certainly on the journey towards falling head over heels for this wonderful super food.
Chaga grows naturally on living birch trees, and slowly harnesses the strength, nutrients and longevity of living trees into a concentrated form. This makes chaga one of the most nutrient dense and powerful superfoods found on our planet! It’s been traditionally used for thousands of years to prevent diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancers while benefiting the organs and immune system. For me, the prevention aspect of drinking chaga is what drew me in.
In our modern world of medicine there is so much talk of promoting awareness for various cancers and solving a wide spectrum of health issues with prescription medication. Now I’m not saying this aspect of medicine is completely wrong, but I do believe there needs to be a shift to promoting and discussing prevention which in turn, will lead to less talk and need for treatment. I want to protect my future self as much as I possibly can now , and chaga is helping me do just that! So lets protect our future selves, lets fall in love with chaga. Purchase chaga in our online store through this link.
Sherry’s Pick – GLA Borage Oil from Lorna Vanderhaeghe
You know how you have those certain products that if you stop taking/using them you immediately notice? Well GLA is one of those for me and that’s why I’ve chosen it as my pick this month!
GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid) is an Omega-6 essential fatty acid that the body doesn’t produce but is essential for optimal health. Borage is one of the best sources of GLA and is available in either an oil form or in a softgel capsule. Not only can you take it orally, but you can also use it topically on your skin.
As I have aged it’s been really important to me to pay special attention to my skin, in hopes of delaying the aging skin effects for as long as possible! I believe the best way to combat is from the inside! Lorna Vanderhaeghe, a women’s health expert, has written many books, but an excellent resource is her book “Beautiful Skin Begins Within” (which I can offer you for free when you purchase any of Lorna’s skincare products). Lorna talks specifically of GLA in the book noting that GLA is what will help maintain healthy, glowing skin and prevent aging and wrinkles! I can totally attest to the glow it gives my skin! I also noticed a huge improvement with moisture retention. If you don’t think you can take it by the spoonful, we also have it available in capsule. I personally just add it into my morning smoothie.
Not only does GLA benefit our aging skin, but it is offers amazing results for those suffering with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and even acne. Also great for breast health and will help with period pain. Stop by Generation Green and we can talk more about healthy, glowing skin! Purchase Lorna Vanderhaege’s GLA Borage Oil here through this link.
This product is a staple in my fridge and it’s so easy to incorporate into your diet. I love hemp hearts! The fact that they are also a Manitoba product just has me head over heels!
Packed with omega’s, digestible proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, this product not only tastes awesome, but is super mega good for you! I absolutely cannot pass up these little, tender, delicious, nutty tasting seeds when it comes to yogurt, smoothies, baking (hello banana bread, cookies, etc, etc), stir fry, salads…lets be honest, pretty much everything gets a little sprinkle. I’ll also admit I often just eat them straight from the bag…that’s how good they are.
This product is vegan, non GMO project verified, made with 100% wind power (so cool), all natural, and raw! …did I mention Manitoba? As a super fan of our awesome province, I love all things local and these are right up there with my faves. Please do yourself a favor and try them! At Generation Green we have other products from Manitoba Harvest as well, such as the new Hemp Heart Bites (a drool worthy quick and easy snack), and Hemp Protein Powder. Purchase Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts in our online store here through this link.
Mmmmango…. Is my August pick! What could be a better summer snack than some fruit? How about some organic, fair trade, totally natural fruit!
Dried Mango is definitely one of my favourite snack foods here at Generation Green! Brought to us by a fantastic company called Level Ground Trading, a super ethical distributor with only the best food products.
Level Ground Trading is not just offering certified fair-trade products, they participate in direct fair-trade. This is debatably even more beneficial than just having the fair-trade certification. The fair-trade certification itself means that the farm and farmers deal with the fair-trade cooperative which then distributes their product. This is a fabulous program, but the benefit of direct fair-trade is that the farmers deal directly with the company selling their product. Direct fair-trade accounts for even more ethical production, lower costs, and eliminates the need for a large cooperation. Level Ground Trading is very open and honest about their production and company, and produces plenty of literature on the topics.
The other best part is that the ingredient list consists of solely “dried organic mango”. That’s it! No sweeteners, preservatives or sulphites! Just the benefits of eating the most suitable food for your body.
PS. Level Ground Trading also has organic, fair-trade, Dried Pineapple, Tropical Fruit Mix, and Exotic Fruit Mix.
