We have been so impressed with the amount of folks coming in looking to make the small changes to live plastic free!
At Generation Green we continue to look for innovative products that can make these consumer choices affordable and accessible. We also want to continue to encourage people to reuse and reduce their waste by refilling, purchasing in bulk, practicing mindful consumerism and if visiting our in-store cafe, please bring back any packaging received to have composted.
Here are our top 10 plastic free alternatives as we head into Plastic Free July!
Reusable Straws – we stock Onyx Containers stainless steel straws, locally made glass straws from Brook Drabot and silicone straws made in Canada from Colibri. To make it even easier to bring your own straw, we have some lovely, local carrying sleeves from Twinkle & Blink and Colibri wide bag fits 4 of their silicone straws easily!
Produce/Bulk Bags – another fantastic local find from Practical Homestead, that we recently stocked. That plastic, good for nothing roll at the grocery store is definitely a huge focus for many to replace and has us happy dancing over here at GG!
Ditch the saran wrap and try one of these options – Abeego beeswax food wraps or also from Practical Homestead washable, food safe bowl covers, sandwich and cheese wraps. Of course Colibri has long been stocking us with reusable sandwich and snack bags that you’ll find a hundred and one uses for!
Oral Health – Bamboo toothbrushes from BAM Brush and our fabulous find (that took forever!) from Flosspot Gold is vegan corn fibre dental floss. Also available in refill!
Razors – invest in a solid brass safety razor from Well Kept that will last you forever!! Did you know that it’s estimated that over 2 billion plastic razors are discarded in the US alone!?!
Shampoo & Conditioner bars from The Unwrapped Life hit the shelves here a month ago and we’re pretty darn impressed with them! The biggest being that they replace approx 2.5 bottles, so wastefree and economical!
Carry a cup/bottle! This is an easy one! Find one you love and bring it everywhere to have filled.
Cutlery – we have travel cutlery from Joseph Joseph called Go Eat that contains a magnetic fork, spoon and knife that all clip together conveniently in a silicone storage case.
We love that more companies are thinking about packaging, like Glowing Orchid Organics with their new paper tube deodorant that we are now stocking (and love!)
Lastly, REFUSE – have your say to what you purchase and how you purchase it. It’s an ongoing effort but changes are happening! Be one of the change makers!
November is a lovely month full of university midterms…That leaves me with late nights, early mornings, and minimal time to prepare lunch for myself on a regular basis. This usually results in me eating grapes, carrots, or dates constantly throughout the day. Being as waste free as possible though, packing these up in a zip lock bag for school would just not be cool.
Colibri re-usable snack bags are certainly my go-to. They are the perfect size for snacks, fruits, or veggies. They are super quick just to grab in the morning and zip up (no complicated plastic zippy top). And have a waterproof inside. So I can put wet or dry foods in there, and at the end of the day just flip it inside out and give it a wipe clean on the inside, and boom, good-to-go for tomorrow. These are seriously rad and they come in like, a ton of different patterns and sizes-come check them out!
For November I chose our very own line of shampoo as my staff pick. The Generation Green line manufactured by Di erbe Inc. essential oil blend shampoo was quite the little lifesaver for me this past month. Maybe it was because of my gruelling University schedule that I was falling asleep in the shower and possibly forgetting to actually wash my hair, or maybe the shampoo I was using ran out of steam, regardless… my hair was greasy (I couldn’t even pull it off as just really, really shiny). I was so fed up with my extra shiny hair that I came in to work on a day off just to pick out a new shampoo.
Thankfully, I fell in love with GG’s own after the first use as it left my hair soft, lightly naturally scented and most importantly, clean. You can’t get much better than a shampoo (also available in conditioner, body wash, and hand lotion in unscented and essential oil blend) that is locally made, contains no funny sounding/impossible to pronounce/unpleasant ingredients (foaming agent free! Woo!) AND refillable. I’m so excited that this shampoo is now a part of my life, bring in a little (or big) container or purchase a convenient pre-filled plastic bottle at Generation Green to try it out for yourself!

This month, my staff pick is one of my favourite Made in Manitoba Products– Gorp Bars!
These bars make the cut for so many reasons. They are made without the use of fake sugars, preservatives, fillers or colouring. They also don’t use high fructose corn syrup and I guarantee you can read and pronounce every ingredient listed on the back of the package. They are packed with nuts, seeds, and oats which are great for heart health as well as long-lasting energy, not to mention flax and hemp containing omega-3’s and tons of fiber.
I love taking them hiking, eating them before or after a soccer game, or anything in between. They are a healthy and convenient energy food that tastes amazing!
Gorp also commits to give 10% of their net profits to third-world agricultural initiatives and children’s aid programs which is super cool. You can find all three flavours (Cocoa, Hemp & Almond, Peanut Butter & Apple, and Peanut Butter & Raspberry) here at Generation Green. Sold individually or in cases of 16.
I love to burn candles, and one of my favourite moments is when I can curl up with a book, a good cup of tea, and enjoy the warmth a candle creates.
I personally will only use clean burning candles, and my favourite would be Barletta Beeswax candles. Not only are beeswax candles clean burning (no black smoke here), they also act as an air purifier and can rid the air of dust, odors, molds, viruses and environmental toxins. I also love the scent that beeswax candles offer, which was surprising to me due to the fact that I easily can get headaches from scents, but this is a scent that is created naturally from the beeswax.
Barletta Beeswax candles are made with 100% Manitoba beeswax, they are hand poured & dipped and available in over 75 different shapes and sizes! My personal favourite is the mason jar candle that Barletta Beeswax created as a memorial fundraiser candle, for our staff member that we tragically lost. All the profits from these candles go to the University of Winnipeg Amy Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund, and have quickly become known as the “Amy Candle”.
