Waste Free Living – Bulk Additions/Changes

We have been answering so many questions lately about our refill products, that we felt we should probably fill you all in on some changes and additions.

First off we want to give a huge shout out to all of you that have been using the refill system in an effort to reduce waste.  We have been amazed at the amount of interest and use at this location, so much so that we want to keep adding to it!  Please be sure to let us know your requests and if there is enough interest then we would look at bringing that in.

The biggest change that many have noticed is the brand switch of our main household line.  We had been stocking and offering bulk products for the past 5 years from Sapadilla Soap Co. and have now been replacing it with a line from The Unscented Company.  The reason for the change had nothing to do with the product itself, it’s a fabulous line!  Unfortunately though Sapadilla has been sold to a US Corporation called Gorilla Glue and this is just not inline with our mission and commitment to stock Canadian.

The Unscented Company is from Montreal, it is entirely plant-based, biodegradable and yes, unscented.  However, we know many loved the scents that the previous line offered so we are encouraging customers to try their hand at scenting using essential oils that we stock in store.  We have considered offering a custom scenting add-on if there was enough interest.

In addition to the The Unscented Company we have a hair/body line available for refill from local manufacturer, Pure Anada, our always in demand Dry Patch lotion from Di Erbe and from Mama Pacha we offer refills for their popular Calendula infused diaper cream & wipe away bum spray as well as their face cream and beard oil.  Our newest addition is an unscented castille liquid soap that is locally made in Steinbach by Naturally Powerful.

The last of the Eco-life cleaning products are available for purchase & refill until they are finished.  There are also some of the bulk concentrate available for retail purchase on a clearance price.  This line is no longer being manufactured it seems after the farmer that created it passed away.  It’s a wonderful line that we have carried from day one and are sad to see it fall away.

Lastly, we have heard from many of you that are interested in making your own products that you are wanting us to bring in raw ingredients.  We are slowly doing this!  We currently have organic dried Calendula, lavender and rose petals. We plan to add a couple of carrier oils next, citric acid and some popular clays.  Again if there is something you are hoping to find here and there is enough demand we will do our best to add it to the line up!

Of course we should also mention our small bulk food section, this is the list of what we currently offer for organic bulk food:

  • Adagio Acres Naked Oats *MB
  • Tamarak Farms Quinoa *MB

One last reminder, you are more than welcome to bring in your own container to fill, we will weigh it before you fill and deduct that off the product price.  Please only bring CLEAN and dry containers to be filled.

Thank for doing your part to reuse and reduce as well as support local!

October Staff Product Picks

Nolan & Jennifer’s Pick – Little Green Pouch & ChooMee Sip’in Soft Top
Nolan1Nolan:  Kermit the Frog says “it’s not easy being green” but I have to disagree with my Sesame Street friend on this one because I LOVE my little green pouch. Mommy knows I’m a growing baby, who gets grumpy [instantly] when I’m hungry! I’ve heard my parents use the term ‘hangry’ to describe this feeling of mine. I also have zero coordination with putting food in my mouth (what I’m a baby?) And since Mommy likes to keep me clean and dry, she started giving me the ‘little green pouch’ for all of my yogurt and pureed snacks. And to top it off [no pun intended], she puts a ‘ChooMee Sip’in top’ on the pouch, so my food doesn’t spill out everywhere!  This soft top also feels reallllly nice on my gums when I’m teething – which lately has been feeling like forever. I’ve been using these little green godsends since the day I could hold my own bottle.

Jennifer:  Before having a baby, there seemed to be a ‘buzz’ among the parent ===world that these little pouches were awesome. Now that I have a baby, I totally understand everyone’s excitement and I can’t say enough good things about the ‘little green pouch’ AND the ‘ChooMee Sip’in top’. The two products work amazingly together!

The Scoop:
  • They are reusable. And the seal on the top of the pouch is strong, and doesn’t become less effective over time.
  • They never stink. From time to time I have left a pouch in my purse, Nolan’s bag, car, etc. with little bits of leftover food and it never held onto the smell.
  • They are dishwasher safe. Although I prefer to wash them in hot soapy water, and rinse them under the tap.
  • They keep your baby or child happy and quiet. If Nolan is fussy, he immediately calms down holding his green pouch. He associates the pouch with something delicious inside, and gets excited when I give him one. We recently traveled to Spain, and these pouches came in handy on the plane, train, his stroller, everywhere! I also use them at home every single day.
  • And of course, no nasty chemicals are used in creating the pouches or tops.
  • The accessories from the company are a little disappointing in my opinion. Unnecessary baby stuff is wasteful to your wallet, and the environment. Stick to the pouches, and add the ChooMee Sip’in tops. In my opinion, you can’t have one without the other!

Savannah’s Pick – Di’Erbe Peppermint Essential Oil

savannah-peppermint2Whatever was going around this month was not pleasant…

The other week I came down with a brutal cold and congestion. Thank goodness I had a bottle of peppermint essential oil lying around cause it was my best friend.

Peppermint has tons of health benefits and is really good for pain relief (headaches, muscles), but what really helped me out was the sinus relief. I was spraying it, diffusing it, and constantly inhaling it. Honestly nothing cleared up my sinuses like it. It was such a relief to take a deep breath when I had my peppermint oil around. My favorite was to drop it on a tissue and then dab it under my nose so I could keep breathing it in. It was serious relief!

Peppermint essential oil is also good for increasing concentration and alertness, as well as for nausea and motion sickness.

Note: Do not use peppermint oil during pregnancy

Sherry’s Pick – Joy of the Mountains Oil of Oregano

As Savannah mentioned, there definitely  has been some kind of virus whirling around Winnipeg! Everyone is either complaining of a sore throat,  head cold, congestion, cough or all of the above! My tried and true recommendation is Oil of Oregano. Everyone seriously needs to have this as a staple in their med cabinet.

oil of oreganoJoy of the Mountains is my trusted source, (one of the first Canadian brands). They offer quality assurances and rigorous batch testing in order to offer a product that is 4x more effective than other brands. Oil of oregano is great for digestive, respiratory and immune support just to name a few.

For those of you that have never heard of or used oil of oregano, it is a must have herbal remedy! Oil of oregano has powerful antimicrobial benefits that can help fight off infections, and offers antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. A few drops under your tongue a couple of times a day (warning it does taste awful), or you can dilute in juice.  If neither of those appeal to you, they now offer vegetarian oil filled capsules.  In addition to the oil of oregano, Joy of the Mountains also has a great line just for pets called OregaPet.

Dallas’s Pick – Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

Dallas Dr.BFor this month, I picked another magical multi-use product that I just can’t get enough of. Certified Fair trade and now refillable here at Generation Green, Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap is one of absolute favorites. I use mine for hand soap, dish soap, and sometimes….when I’m feeling real lazy I’ll bring it into the shower and wash my hair and body with it. But the magic doesn’t stop there! Use it as a face wash, laundry soap,  fruit/veggie rinse, baby wash, or even shaving cream!

Try it out for yourself by purchasing a brand spanking new bottle in store or bring an empty container you have lying around and we’ll fill it up with your favorite scent (available in unscented, peppermint, lavender, and citrus in bulk) at $1/ounce.

Ana’s Pick – Watuko Headgear

Now that the school year is well underway, I don’t ever (and I mean NEVER) take the time to do my hair in the morning. Soooo it seems appropriate for me to choose Watuko Headgear as my pick this month! This multifunctional headwear is more often than not my soluAna watukotion to a bad hair day.The company was established in 2011 and all designing and manufacturing is done in Canada– yay! Their vision also includes working exclusively with companies of integrity and companies who uphold the responsibilities of social wellness for their employees- double yay! By using bamboo for their products, they have created something that is comparable to the softness of silk (since bamboo fibers are naturally smoother and rounder with no sharp spurs to irritate the skin). This makes the fabric hypoallergenic and perfect for anyone who experience allergic reactions to other natural fibers such as wool or hemp.

Bamboo is also antibacterial and antifungal and extremely breathable. The cross-section of the bamboo fiber is covered with micro-gaps giving the fabric better moisture absorption and ventilation. As a result, it is able to keep the wearer almost two degrees cooler in the heat and noticeably warmer in the cold. This makes the headgear great for all season wear! These headbands can be worn for style points, exercising in and outdoors, or just for comfort. Bamboo is also the most renewable resource on our planet yayayayya!

Lots of people ask about how to wash their Watuko headgear: they can be washed with nearly everything. However, for the best maintenance treat them as special garments. This means using the gentle cycle, cold or luke warm water, and line drying is preferred. Machine drying may cause the garment to lose its shape or slightly shrink in size. Come by Generation Green to check out the many colours and patterns we have in stock!
