Sunny summer skies and evening campfires mean it’s the time of year to talk about natural alternatives to stay safe outdoors. As information is surfacing, it’s becoming more and more mainstream to look for natural alternatives to sunscreen and bug spray. If that’s what you’re looking for, stop by the shop, we would love to show you and talk all about our safe and natural methods to keep yourself safely bug and sunburnt free!
Conventional sunscreens may contain chemical fillers and ingredients that can cause not only skin irritations but even hormone disruption. Zinc and titanium oxide provide a mineral alternative to UVA protection. Sometimes people question the safety of these ingredients, but they only become dangerous when aerosolized, like most things aerosol! Check out zinc oxide’s rating on EWG’s skin care database to see for yourself! While many of us enjoy a little “golden glow” and the vitamin D we get from the sun, no one enjoys a sunburn! Sunscreen & blocks are important but don’t rely just on them! Try to avoid those peak period times of the day, find or make shade, wear a hat & sunglasses and check the UV rating.
Bug spray is another important one to switch over from the conventional stuff. If you weren’t already aware, the active ingredient in bug spray is deet which is very literally a pesticide. It certainly poisons the mosquitoes but all the while absorbing into your skin and body. We feel incredibly passionate about oil-based alternatives to repelling the bugs! Luckily bugs hate lemon, citronella, eucalyptus, and many other entirely natural oils! No bug repellent (even those with Deet) are 100% effective so take precautions. Wear long pants/sleeves, socks/shoes, especially when going into woodsy areas. For infants be sure to add netting to strollers and carriers.
There are many controversial reports about the effectiveness of these natural alternatives, but personally I feel when comparing to a conventional product and the potential health risks those ingredients may offer, I am going with the natural choice.
Summer is short for us Winnipeggers so let’s enjoy it, safely and naturally!
I love makeup! It’s my favorite part about getting ready and it’s my favorite section at Generation Green! Maybe you’ve seen me at the shop sporting colorful glittery eyes with an extra shiny lip or a pure glitter highlight (I like to have a lot of fun with my looks), either way, I always get so excited to help with any makeup-related questions. I’ll talk more about what exactly we can help you with later on.
I consider my own makeup practice as a habitual process of celebrating creativity and exercising self-care and self-love. It’s what makes me happy, and I want to have as much fun with makeup as I possibly can! I wish everything about makeup was fun-related… but unfortunately there are so many unspoken rules and standards that dictate how to “properly” wear makeup. Wearing ‘too much’ is a no, wearing none at all welcomes the wonderfully uplifting comments like “You look so tired today!”, and being 30+ should rule out wearing fun colors on your eyes/lips, obviously… I’m sick of it! Makeup should not be policed by unrealistic standards of beauty and age restrictions! I strongly believe that you should wear whatever you’re most comfortable in and select makeup that makes you feel happy!
I have found it incredibly helpful to take time to understand what makeup means to me. I have become grounded in my own self and secure with my decisions when it comes to makeup (this is why it’s so easy for me to rock a wild glittery look for a 9 am shift). Take a minute out of your morning routine to consider what wearing makeup means to you. Remember, the reasons you come up with are valid. It truly does not matter whether you are doing it for yourself, for someone else, to better deal with peoples’ ignorant comments about the state of your skin (people suck sometimes…), whatever! Understand why you choose to wear makeup and ground yourself in your ability to actively participate in your own body’s autonomy.
Now, when it comes to natural makeup… I have truly tried it all. Considering this, I can confidently say that the makeup line from Pure Anada is actually SO AMAZING. I’m going to take you through some of my favorite products. Maybe some will become your own favorites, maybe they won’t, but these are the products that fuel my love for naturally made, beautiful makeup.
Their mascara is #1 in my heart. It stays on all day, does not smudge, pumps up your lashes, and even holds up pretty well to tears/other liquids (it’s not totally waterproof, but it is definitely water resistant).
I swear by the pressed mineral foundation. It can give you very heavy coverage (if you apply heavily/apply in layers) but I have also used it for a finishing powder/ light foundation. It never looks powdery AND the colors blend beautifully with natural skin tones. A++++
Last, but by no means least is their lip gloss. My absolute favorite color to wear is Sheer Opal, it’s a transparent gloss with a hint of baby pink that wears with a wet, dewy look. It’s incredibly moisturizing and it smells very yummy. I have also used this to apply loose glitter to my eyes/cheeks… it’s the right amount of sticky that works better than any glitter adhesive I have used before. WONDERFUL!!!
Finally, let me briefly explain what we can help you with here at Generation Green. We are by no means makeup artists.. but we have been told that we are quite the superstars when it comes to color matching. Finding the perfect shade of foundation can be overwhelming, but we are always happy to try however many colors it takes to find something that will work best for you! If you have questions regarding the ingredients/production/how something so pretty and pink can be naturally made, we can also help you out there! Pure Anada’s website is an excellent resource if you’re ever searching for more information! If you’re ever in the store when I’m working… ask me about what colors compliment each other or how to do a fun shimmery eye, I LOVE talking about makeup… if you haven’t already noticed.
We’ve all experienced that one too many, or maybe you’re a lightweight like myself and feel the effects of alcohol rather easy. Regardless, the next day is not as much fun as the evening prior!
Well now there is a natural prevention/remedy available at Generation Green that actually works!
All natural “Clear Head” was formulated using a remedy that was actually discovered centuries ago! A little herb known as Milk Thistle.
Milk Thistle is a flowering herb related to the daisy and ragweed family. Offering up some amazing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits!
The active compound in the milk thistle extract is silymarin. This extract has been used for over 2000 years to treat a range of liver diseases, kidney and gallbladder issues. More recently, it has been shown to be effective in the relief of symptoms of hangovers.
Each of the little packets have 4 – 250 mg capsules in them. Simply take two before consuming alcohol and one more capsule at the end of the evening. Take the last capsule the next morning if necessary.
Clear Head was developed at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals at the University of Manitoba, is approved by Health Canada and has been issued a natural product number.
Please drink responsibly! Everything in moderation is key.
Having long been a fan of Chad Cornell and what he was doing for Winnipeg folks, we were excited when the opportunity arose to offer our customers his amazing blends of organic teas. Chad is our Manitoba maker being featured this month!
I love tea, not just the taste of tea but the health benefits also. When I opened Hollow Reed Holistic back in 2005, I had many people coming in with specific requests and needs. Out of this came our unique selection of enjoyable and therapeutic tea blends.
Which tea is your personal favourite?
Even though I’m surrounded daily by a lot of different tea options I really love a good old-fashioned Peppermint tea which is also the main ingredient in the Manitoba Wilderness Tea – organic of course. I find it uplifting yet relaxing, it’s great for digestion and a potent anti-viral. My favourite tea blend by far is the Om Shantea blend which I find gives me strength, clarity, and a feeling of calm all at the same time.
What’s different about Hollow Reed tea?
I think it’s that we genuinely care about what we are offering and people can sense that. Our teas are also pure – organic, fresh, and effective in helping people on their journey to health and vitality. We don’t add any weird artificial flavours or colours that you often find in many other teas. They are also not made and bagged up in a factory somewhere, we hand blend them here in Winnipeg and package them ourselves. They have also been designed by a trained Master Herbalist, myself, which I think really helps – they work and they taste good!
What is your favourite way/time to enjoy tea?
I love my tea before bedtime with a book. However, I would have to say that I really benefit from drinking tea while I do private consultations with people. For this I prefer the Om Shantea or the Wize One because they both have the Indian herb Gotu Kola in them which supports a calm and clear mind.
What’s the biggest challenge you faced in creating your product?
I think our biggest challenge has been that our goal is to keep our product high in quality but low in price. However with the cost of shipping and our desire to pay local harvesters a good dollar for their efforts it’s not always easy. Fortunately we have found a market that shares the same value system as us – and the same commitment to quality.
What’s your favourite thing about Manitoba?
Hands down it’s the Boreal Forest and the people. I was born in the Canadian Shield and feel like it’s in my blood. I lived on the West Coast for years but much of the time I longed for the Boreal Forest and the ancient shield rock. We have an incredible diversity of medicinal plants here as well as an amazing diversity of people and cultures. It’s really special, and I think more people are beginning to realize that.
You can find Hollow Reed organic teas at Generation now.
We have chosen Amber Magus the creator of Naked Skincare & Apothecary as our December “Meet Your Maker”. Let’s see what she has to say!
What inspired you to start making Naked Skincare?
Skincare has been a passion of mine for a long time. I’ve worked as an Aesthetician since 2010 specializing in skin and body care. In 2013 I started a lifestyle and beauty blog, giving my readers tips and tricks about how to properly care for their skin. I also discussed my current favourite products and eventually started offering DIY recipes such as home masks, and body scrubs. It was then this natural progression of realizing that this is something I really love doing. Looking out on the natural skin care market as is, a lot of companies are either advertising and claiming they are all natural but still use preservatives, artificial fragrance and colours. Or you have the natural companies like mine but who charge an arm and a leg for it. I personally didn’t want to give an arm and leg to have the comfort of using a high-end all natural line, so I created one, that is all natural, with a minimalist feel, using the best plant powered ingredients at a reasonable price.
Which product is your personal favourite?
This is always such a difficult one to answer because I love all of them! but if i have to choose, I would go with the cleansing oil, it is my go to all the time. It just melts away makeup, built up dirt and oil and leaves my skin feeling so clean and hydrated. It is also the product that started it all so it has a very special place in my heart.
What’s your favourite ingredient to use in your skin care, and why?
There’s so many amazing ingredients that I use and love in my skin care and I could probably blab on for hours about them all, but I’d say, Tamanu Oil because it truly is a magic oil, it’s incredibly healing for your skin. Currently I use it in the Oil Cleanser, but will be making a few other products that will help with certain skin issues.
Why should someone buy Naked Skincare?
I think naked skin care is for people looking for products that have a minimalist straight forward approach. It’s a plant powered line that is curated by an Aesthetician so the skin needs is always my first priority when creating formulations.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in developing your product
Finding the perfect combination of oils that are going to not only treat and hydrate skin but ones that also feel nice and absorb quickly. I never want any of my products to leave the skin with a slick oily feel, so finding the right combinations can sometimes be tricky.
What’s your favourite thing about Manitoba?
I love those prairie sunsets and that even in the dead of winter the sun can be shining and the sky blue. I was born and raised in England and it can often be quite grey and gloomy and its a weird thing to appreciate but the sky just seems so much bigger and brighter here in Manitoba!

November is a lovely month full of university midterms…That leaves me with late nights, early mornings, and minimal time to prepare lunch for myself on a regular basis. This usually results in me eating grapes, carrots, or dates constantly throughout the day. Being as waste free as possible though, packing these up in a zip lock bag for school would just not be cool.
Colibri re-usable snack bags are certainly my go-to. They are the perfect size for snacks, fruits, or veggies. They are super quick just to grab in the morning and zip up (no complicated plastic zippy top). And have a waterproof inside. So I can put wet or dry foods in there, and at the end of the day just flip it inside out and give it a wipe clean on the inside, and boom, good-to-go for tomorrow. These are seriously rad and they come in like, a ton of different patterns and sizes-come check them out!
For November I chose our very own line of shampoo as my staff pick. The Generation Green line manufactured by Di erbe Inc. essential oil blend shampoo was quite the little lifesaver for me this past month. Maybe it was because of my gruelling University schedule that I was falling asleep in the shower and possibly forgetting to actually wash my hair, or maybe the shampoo I was using ran out of steam, regardless… my hair was greasy (I couldn’t even pull it off as just really, really shiny). I was so fed up with my extra shiny hair that I came in to work on a day off just to pick out a new shampoo.
Thankfully, I fell in love with GG’s own after the first use as it left my hair soft, lightly naturally scented and most importantly, clean. You can’t get much better than a shampoo (also available in conditioner, body wash, and hand lotion in unscented and essential oil blend) that is locally made, contains no funny sounding/impossible to pronounce/unpleasant ingredients (foaming agent free! Woo!) AND refillable. I’m so excited that this shampoo is now a part of my life, bring in a little (or big) container or purchase a convenient pre-filled plastic bottle at Generation Green to try it out for yourself!
*Di Erbe is a Manitoba organic, vegan skin care manufacturer
This month, my staff pick is one of my favourite Made in Manitoba Products– Gorp Bars!
These bars make the cut for so many reasons. They are made without the use of fake sugars, preservatives, fillers or colouring. They also don’t use high fructose corn syrup and I guarantee you can read and pronounce every ingredient listed on the back of the package. They are packed with nuts, seeds, and oats which are great for heart health as well as long-lasting energy, not to mention flax and hemp containing omega-3’s and tons of fiber.
I love taking them hiking, eating them before or after a soccer game, or anything in between. They are a healthy and convenient energy food that tastes amazing!
Gorp also commits to give 10% of their net profits to third-world agricultural initiatives and children’s aid programs which is super cool. You can find all three flavours (Cocoa, Hemp & Almond, Peanut Butter & Apple, and Peanut Butter & Raspberry) here at Generation Green. Sold individually or in cases of 16.
I love to burn candles, and one of my favourite moments is when I can curl up with a book, a good cup of tea, and enjoy the warmth a candle creates.
I personally will only use clean burning candles, and my favourite would be Barletta Beeswax candles. Not only are beeswax candles clean burning (no black smoke here), they also act as an air purifier and can rid the air of dust, odors, molds, viruses and environmental toxins. I also love the scent that beeswax candles offer, which was surprising to me due to the fact that I easily can get headaches from scents, but this is a scent that is created naturally from the beeswax.
Barletta Beeswax candles are made with 100% Manitoba beeswax, they are hand poured & dipped and available in over 75 different shapes and sizes! My personal favourite is the mason jar candle that Barletta Beeswax created as a memorial fundraiser candle, for our staff member that we tragically lost. All the profits from these candles go to the University of Winnipeg Amy Gilbert Memorial Scholarship Fund, and have quickly become known as the “Amy Candle”.
I would have thought by now that everyone has heard of Hemp Hearts and their benefits, but surprisingly folks are still discovering this amazing superfood!
One of the biggest questions I get asked is if Hemp Hearts are the same as marijuana and will I feel different eating them? Yes, hemp is a species of Cannabis sativa but no, hemp is not the same as marijuana. Hemp contains 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) while marijuana contains up to 20% or more.
Hemp Hearts are one of those super foods that you can enjoy right out of the bag! They are slightly nutty flavoured, soft, and so easy to add into your diet. Add them to your morning smoothie, cereal, yoghurt, salads, soups, I even throw them into stir fry’s! They don’t overpower the taste of other foods but pack a whole lot of health benefits! Manitoba Harvest has a great recipe page that you can find by clicking here.
Hemp Hearts contain 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of Omegas per 30 gram serving.
More digestible protein than meat, whole eggs, cheese, human milk, cows milk or any other high protein food
Rich in Vitamin E
The Omega-6 fatty acids in hemp stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism, and help the brain function.
The Omega-3 fatty acids in hemp reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, lower blood pressure, and may even ward off Alzheimer’s disease. Hemp seeds are one of the few Omega-3 sources found in plants.
Besides Hemp Hearts, there are a number of other hemp products that offer the same benefits. At Generation Green, we stock the following Manitoba Harvest Hemp products:
Organic Hemp Hearts (by the bag & now also in bulk!), Yummy Hemp Heart Bites (a perfect snack), Hemp Pro 70 Protein Powder (water-soluble and has a smooth texture), Hemp Bliss Beverages (certified organic), and their brand new energy bars in three flavours (chocolate, vanilla & apple cinnamon).
Just recently I tried out my first cup of certified organic and wildly harvested Canadian chaga tea from Annanda Chaga, and well…. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I’ve never tasted a tea so truly earthy before (I guess I’m pretty bad at describing tastes… but it was wicked).
I never was a huge tea drinker, it had always just tasted like watered down nothingness to me, but after I made a commitment to quit caffeine I needed something other than hot lemon water to keep me lovin life. So I tried various caffeine free, organic and fair trade teas but found nothing I fell in love with. I’m not saying I’m in LOVE with chaga just yet, but I’m certainly on the journey towards falling head over heels for this wonderful super food.
Chaga grows naturally on living birch trees, and slowly harnesses the strength, nutrients and longevity of living trees into a concentrated form. This makes chaga one of the most nutrient dense and powerful superfoods found on our planet! It’s been traditionally used for thousands of years to prevent diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and cancers while benefiting the organs and immune system. For me, the prevention aspect of drinking chaga is what drew me in.
In our modern world of medicine there is so much talk of promoting awareness for various cancers and solving a wide spectrum of health issues with prescription medication. Now I’m not saying this aspect of medicine is completely wrong, but I do believe there needs to be a shift to promoting and discussing prevention which in turn, will lead to less talk and need for treatment. I want to protect my future self as much as I possibly can now , and chaga is helping me do just that! So lets protect our future selves, lets fall in love with chaga. Purchase chaga in our online store through this link.
Sherry’s Pick – GLA Borage Oil from Lorna Vanderhaeghe
You know how you have those certain products that if you stop taking/using them you immediately notice? Well GLA is one of those for me and that’s why I’ve chosen it as my pick this month!
GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid) is an Omega-6 essential fatty acid that the body doesn’t produce but is essential for optimal health. Borage is one of the best sources of GLA and is available in either an oil form or in a softgel capsule. Not only can you take it orally, but you can also use it topically on your skin.
As I have aged it’s been really important to me to pay special attention to my skin, in hopes of delaying the aging skin effects for as long as possible! I believe the best way to combat is from the inside! Lorna Vanderhaeghe, a women’s health expert, has written many books, but an excellent resource is her book “Beautiful Skin Begins Within” (which I can offer you for free when you purchase any of Lorna’s skincare products). Lorna talks specifically of GLA in the book noting that GLA is what will help maintain healthy, glowing skin and prevent aging and wrinkles! I can totally attest to the glow it gives my skin! I also noticed a huge improvement with moisture retention. If you don’t think you can take it by the spoonful, we also have it available in capsule. I personally just add it into my morning smoothie.
Not only does GLA benefit our aging skin, but it is offers amazing results for those suffering with skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and even acne. Also great for breast health and will help with period pain. Stop by Generation Green and we can talk more about healthy, glowing skin! Purchase Lorna Vanderhaege’s GLA Borage Oil here through this link.
This product is a staple in my fridge and it’s so easy to incorporate into your diet. I love hemp hearts! The fact that they are also a Manitoba product just has me head over heels!
Packed with omega’s, digestible proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber, this product not only tastes awesome, but is super mega good for you! I absolutely cannot pass up these little, tender, delicious, nutty tasting seeds when it comes to yogurt, smoothies, baking (hello banana bread, cookies, etc, etc), stir fry, salads…lets be honest, pretty much everything gets a little sprinkle. I’ll also admit I often just eat them straight from the bag…that’s how good they are.
This product is vegan, non GMO project verified, made with 100% wind power (so cool), all natural, and raw! …did I mention Manitoba? As a super fan of our awesome province, I love all things local and these are right up there with my faves. Please do yourself a favor and try them! At Generation Green we have other products from Manitoba Harvest as well, such as the new Hemp Heart Bites (a drool worthy quick and easy snack), and Hemp Protein Powder. Purchase Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts in our online store here through this link.
Mmmmango…. Is my August pick! What could be a better summer snack than some fruit? How about some organic, fair trade, totally natural fruit!
Dried Mango is definitely one of my favourite snack foods here at Generation Green! Brought to us by a fantastic company called Level Ground Trading, a super ethical distributor with only the best food products.
Level Ground Trading is not just offering certified fair-trade products, they participate in direct fair-trade. This is debatably even more beneficial than just having the fair-trade certification. The fair-trade certification itself means that the farm and farmers deal with the fair-trade cooperative which then distributes their product. This is a fabulous program, but the benefit of direct fair-trade is that the farmers deal directly with the company selling their product. Direct fair-trade accounts for even more ethical production, lower costs, and eliminates the need for a large cooperation. Level Ground Trading is very open and honest about their production and company, and produces plenty of literature on the topics.
The other best part is that the ingredient list consists of solely “dried organic mango”. That’s it! No sweeteners, preservatives or sulphites! Just the benefits of eating the most suitable food for your body.
PS. Level Ground Trading also has organic, fair-trade, Dried Pineapple, Tropical Fruit Mix, and Exotic Fruit Mix.
