With Halloween at the end of the month, pumpkin carving is likely to be on the mind! Here’s a little guide to making your yearly ritual a little more eco-friendly!
Manitoba’s climate doesn’t always allow for the widest selection of fresh produce, but fall is where we thrive! Skip the big chain store, and line-up and go local! Manitoba has tons of produce farms where you can pick up your Photosoon-to-be jack-o-lantern! Stop by a farmers market before the cold weather, or make a whole day out of visiting a pumpkin patch. There are so many activity-filled farms close to home. A quick google search provided me with tons and tons of Manitoba richness!

Skip the “carving kit” from the store. More likely than not, you already have everything you need at home! It seems mostly like a marketing scheme, it comes with pretty basic tools!
Stencil – print one off from home, or draw your own!
Carving tools – more likely than not you can use an array of kitchen tools for this
Scoop – spoons and spatulas if you need them. But who doesn’t love to clean out their pumpkin with bare hands???
Marker – any marker will do just fine!
And for cleanliness, just use some recycled or recyclable paper or cardboard!

I really hope everyone is already onto this! I love roasted pumpkin seeds! Sort those seeds out of the goop, add in some oil and salt. Roast them for 45 minutes at 300 degrees!
I have always just thrown this part out. Turns out you can throw it in a food processor to make your own pumpkin puree! This is gonna be way better than the canned pumpkin from a store! How to make puree link here!
The pumpkin puree can be used in recipes, like soup or your own homemade pumpkin spice latte! You could even incorporate it into some homemade cosmetics such as a body scrub or lotion!
You can cook up the rest of the pumpkin just like any other root vegetable! Roast it in the oven and serve it as a main dish! Likewise, you could chop it up for soup and salads. Or if you just can’t get enough of the puree, you can use it for that as well!
To finish up this pumpkin making zero-waste, be sure to compost, rather than trash, the leftover scraps!
