Clean Cosmetics – How Far Have We Come?

I don’t know if I can thoroughly express the pivotal change in my life when I began learning about conventional cosmetics and the potential health implications they can have.  It was definitely an overwhelming, and scary realization that this could possibly be true.  I then set out in search of alternatives and was so fortunate to discover a few local manufacturers that could answer my questions, and in turn I could begin to trust.

My health, as I’m sure yours, is most important to me and I’m not willing to knowingly compromise it, especially when I have a choice!  It’s been said that by the time a woman heads out the front door, she has spritzed, sudsed, and slathered herself in more than 127 different chemicals, many of them more toxic than beautifying.

After the book came out “There’s Lead In Your Lipstick” by eco-expert Gillian Deacon, many women started questioning if the health conditions, including cancer were possibly related to the unimaginable amount of toxins, parabens, hormone disrupters and synthetic chemicals they had allowed  into their bodies through the use of conventional products.  We naively trust that there are regulations and systems in place to protect us but unfortunately those systems are only about regulating the “safe amounts” of the known hazardous ingredient into a specific product. As far as my research and knowledge, there has never been a study that shows the “safety” of the possible 127 chemicals taken in at one time.

Our skin is our largest organ (yes, it’s an organ!!) and it’s absorbing all that we put on it, which ends up in our blood stream!

EWG (The Environmenal Working Group) has compiled an electronic database (the skindeep database) of ingredient labels for body care products and cross-linked these ingredients with large databases describing chemical toxicity and then rates them on the hazards.  This is a great resource when you are starting out, or expanding your knowledge on potentially harmful chemicals.  They rate the ingredients/products on a scale of unemployment essay help starting an essay go https://geneseelandlordassoc.org/category/social-media-essay/44/ follow site https://robinsoncollege.nsw.edu.au/example-of-a-one-page-college-essay/ https://heystamford.com/writing/all-my-life-for-sale-essay/8/ http://bookclubofwashington.org/books/help-creating-a-thesis-statement/14/ dissertation bupropion gastritis http://writeinbk.com/students/summary-of-the-essay-womens-business/24/ professional essays editing sites us dissertation margins apa source help me write an application letter http://hooligansmagazine.com/2155-where-to-buy-essays/ viagra yahoo thesis proposal sample slideshare writemyessay com scam https://masterpieceministries.org/ap-u-s-history-essay-rubric/ bizzy bone eazy e how do i get aol email on my iphone programming homework help generic viagra tab essay on nature for class 1 enter site essay on struggle is the key to success thesis defense structure http://websites.suagm.edu/prinnovationportal/?erectile=where-to-cialis-online-in-toronto essay on newspaper in gujarati research proposal writing service definition argument essay outline 1-2 Low Hazard, 3-6 Moderate and 7-10 High Hazard…look up fragrance and it’s an “8” score! Eliminating “fragrance” in my opinion,  is the place to start if you start anywhere!

About FRAGRANCE: The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Thankfully, we have options!  It may take some work to find them, but I see more and more companies beginning to make some changes.  It is however up to us as consumers to continue to DEMAND that our health not be compromised by the ingredients manufacturers CHOOSE to use! How? We simply don’t continue to support them!

Pure Anada Cosmetics has been my go to as a trusted source for safe cosmetics and skincare products.  They are a manufacturer in Modern, Manitoba and have been influential in setting the bar in my opinion, for transparency and proving natural cosmetics can stand up to conventional products.

Candace Grenier is the creator behind Pure Anada and has taken the company from home hobby to a leader in eco-certified organic cosmetic manufacturing in Canada!  FYI – only approximately 5% of cosmetic companies actually manufacture their own products and there appears to be some sort of trade secret protection when it comes to fragrance and flavour. Yet another reason Pure Anada became a company I chose to support and trust for the past 7 years!

Of course we’re not just talking makeup here!  The cosmetic umbrella includes shampoo, conditioner, hair styling products, toothpaste, deodorants, lotions, scrubs, face cleansers, bar soap, moisturizers, shaving cream, lip balm, nail polish, diaper cream, nipple cream, massage oils & MORE!!!

At Generation Green we know how overwhelming and confusing all the information out there can be, not to mention how “greenwashing” (FYI: those bunny ears on products only mean they didn’t test it on an animal, not that it’s safe), same goes for the words “natural” and “organic” (no regulating on those words!) BUT, WE ARE HERE TO HELP!! It’s one step at a time and one change at a time!  It started with cosmetics as my focus and grew into Generation Green over almost 7 years!  We are still learning, still growing but the more we know, the better we can make informed choices!

Waste Free Living – Bulk Additions/Changes

We have been answering so many questions lately about our refill products, that we felt we should probably fill you all in on some changes and additions.

First off we want to give a huge shout out to all of you that have been using the refill system in an effort to reduce waste.  We have been amazed at the amount of interest and use at this location, so much so that we want to keep adding to it!  Please be sure to let us know your requests and if there is enough interest then we would look at bringing that in.

The biggest change that many have noticed is the brand switch of our main household line.  We had been stocking and offering bulk products for the past 5 years from Sapadilla Soap Co. and have now been replacing it with a line from The Unscented Company.  The reason for the change had nothing to do with the product itself, it’s a fabulous line!  Unfortunately though Sapadilla has been sold to a US Corporation called Gorilla Glue and this is just not inline with our mission and commitment to stock Canadian.

The Unscented Company is from Montreal, it is entirely plant-based, biodegradable and yes, unscented.  However, we know many loved the scents that the previous line offered so we are encouraging customers to try their hand at scenting using essential oils that we stock in store.  We have considered offering a custom scenting add-on if there was enough interest.

In addition to the The Unscented Company we have a hair/body line available for refill from local manufacturer, Pure Anada, our always in demand Dry Patch lotion from Di Erbe and from Mama Pacha we offer refills for their popular Calendula infused diaper cream & wipe away bum spray as well as their face cream and beard oil.  Our newest addition is an unscented castille liquid soap that is locally made in Steinbach by Naturally Powerful.

The last of the Eco-life cleaning products are available for purchase & refill until they are finished.  There are also some of the bulk concentrate available for retail purchase on a clearance price.  This line is no longer being manufactured it seems after the farmer that created it passed away.  It’s a wonderful line that we have carried from day one and are sad to see it fall away.

Lastly, we have heard from many of you that are interested in making your own products that you are wanting us to bring in raw ingredients.  We are slowly doing this!  We currently have organic dried Calendula, lavender and rose petals. We plan to add a couple of carrier oils next, citric acid and some popular clays.  Again if there is something you are hoping to find here and there is enough demand we will do our best to add it to the line up!

Of course we should also mention our small bulk food section, this is the list of what we currently offer for organic bulk food:

  • Adagio Acres Naked Oats *MB
  • Tamarak Farms Quinoa *MB
  • Wildman Rice *MB
  • Pistachios
  • Spanish Almonds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Cacao Nibs
  • Non GMO Popping Corn
  • Garbonzo Beans
  • Medjool Dates
  • Aluminum Free Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Flour
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Coconut Flakes
  • Lightly Dusted Ginger
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Nutritional Yeast
  • Lentils
  • Cane Sugar
  • Trail Mix
  • Pink Himalayan Salt
  • Xylitol

One last reminder, you are more than welcome to bring in your own container to fill, we will weigh it before you fill and deduct that off the product price.  Please only bring CLEAN and dry containers to be filled.

Thank for doing your part to reuse and reduce as well as support local!

July Staff Product Picks

At Generation Green we want to be able to offer the best selection of products possible, as well as be able to offer our personal opinion, which means we have to try a lot of products! (I know, it’s a tough job!) We definitely all have favorites, and “can’t live without” products! Here are our favorites this month…

I dream of Swell Bottles!
I dream of Swell Bottles!

Dallas’s Pick – Swell Bottle

I think it’s time for us all to acknowledge how wicked Swell Bottles are. Never mind their super stylish shape, colors and textures, they actually hold up to truly keeping your water cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. Just this past week I enjoyed five days experiencing the wonderful sun and songs of the 2015 Winnipeg Folk Fest. Being fully aware of the sweatyness and wicked heat July brings to Winnipeg, I brought my Swell Bottle along with me and once again, I was truly amazed at how awesome the Swell Bottle is. On one +28 day of the fest, I filled my beauty of a bottle up with refreshingly cool water at 9 am. Then, because I’m always on top of things, I left my Swell to sit and roast in the sun back at my campground site until 4pm. After returning for a cool down after a long day of folking and to finally grab my Swell, my water was as cold as it was when I had first filled it up at 9 am! My Swell has continuously allowed me to enjoy the luxury of having access to cold water and has yet to let me down. It is without a doubt that I would choose Swell Bottles as my staff pick of the month. Try it out for yourself during Winnipeg’s short summer season to witness how truly awesome this product is!

Sherry’s Pick – Pure Anada Mascara

I have barely there lashes so seriously need to coat em to feel that I look awake! Plus I wear glasses so mascara helps them not to get lost behind them!
Pure Anada’s Mascara was the first product I tried of their natural mineral makeup products, and I am now a loyal user of the complete line! After trying so many “natural” mascara’s I was continually disappointed.  I wanted something that could perform as well (if not better) as conventional mascara but without all the chemicals! I was one of those people that constantly had itchy, red eyes from wearing mascara.  Discovering that Pure Anada originally had their mascara formulated in Europe, where cosmetic regulations are much stricter than Canadian, and that the mascara was created with a PH level that is perfect for eyes,  made me want to try it.  Not only is it safe for your eyes but it seriously gives you everything you want from a mascara! No clumping or flaking, just great length and fullness! Available in Black, Brown & Blue and so affordable at $14.00 per tube! The mascara is vegan, gluten, paraben and mercury  free.
Not just for babies but this babe too!

Savannah’s Pick – Belly Buttons & Babies Sunscreen

It may be cliché that my July pick be sunscreen… But let’s be real, this past weekend was scorching. And spending it camping at folk fest means minimal shade… I am one to avoid sunscreen and bring on the tan, but by Saturday and full body sunburn I knew it was time to smarten up. I applied my Belly Buttons and Babies sunscreen and survived the 30+ and sunny weather for 2 more days. A natural sunscreen is super important as 60% of what you apply on your skin goes into your bloodstream. Drugstore and conventional sunscreen are filled with plenty of chemicals and who-knows-what that is positioning your body, yuck! Belly Buttons and Babies sunscreen is filled only with basic and natural ingredients (that you can read) to protect you from the sun. And thanks to it, as my sunburn fades, I am happily entering brown town. We carry a couple other brands as well to give everyone options… Made for Skin and Mama Pacha are superb options as well and these guys are even produced in Winnipeg.  So I encourage you to buy locally and naturally!

Kicking Horse or Kissin Horse?
Kicking Horse or Kissin Horse?

Ana’s Pick – Kicking Horse Coffee

I have become quite the coffee fanatic in the last year or so and I must confess.. I am picky. I may even go as far as saying that I am the most picky java consumer out there. When I discovered Kicking Horse coffee, I was first hooked after just reading the bag.The descriptions make your mouth water before you’ve even thought about brewing it. Seriously. I am a sucker for a good dark roast and I couldn’t pass up Grizzly Claw after reading these 4 words: Rich. Dark. Chocolate. Decadent. Hello!! Yes please! And the rest is history. I’m in love! At Generation Green, Kicking Horse coffee is sold in 1lb whole bean bags, which allows you to grind your coffee just before use, at just the right grind for the most satisfying cup of joe. But wait, the best part- the beans are certified organic AND fair trade (not to mention roasted in Canada)! What could be better? Whether you’re pulling an all nighter before an exam, coming back to life on a Monday morning, or camping in the Whiteshell, Kicking Horse is sure to make you do your happy coffee dance…that’s a thing, right?

Brikhouse Teething Necklace
Yeah, I know I’m cute!

Nolan’s Pick (our staff Jennifer’s son) – brikHOUSE Teething Necklaces

These new silicone teething necklaces in at Generation Green are the bomb! I can’t tell you enough about the struggles I’ve had with this teething business! These are seriously awesome to just grab onto with my little hands and gnaw on! Surprising that my mom let’s me do this to her beautiful new necklace, but that’s my mom, always thinking of me!

brikhouse teething necklaces are non-toxic, 100% food grade silicone, with breakaway clasps.  Available in several styles and colors.

Winners of our Mothers Day Contest are….

master-educators-2012-contest-winners

Colleen Rose & Mother ***

My Mom’s birthday is May 2nd the day this contest closes, so firstly what a nice surprise that would be to win on her birthday. My Mom is awesome.
My Mom is the anchor that keeps our family grounded. Her creativity and giving spirit always inspired me growing up and helped shape the woman I am today. She fostered in me a spirit of volunteerism and to taught me to share my gifts with others and to see and appreciate the beauty in nature.
My Mom is always there’s to listen and really taught me to see the good in others and that everyone has something to contribute. The most important thing she taught me is that the most important things in life are not things but the relationships you build and nurture.
My Mom always puts others first and to pamper her would be a special treat that I would love to share with her. My Mom really is my heart.

Pam Pullen & Daughter Stephanie ***

In my daughter’s eyes I can see the reflection of who I am. Stephanie is caring, kind, funny, hard working, sensitive, smart and a great Mom.
We talk all the time and still cry when we see those M&M’s candy commercials. I have so many happy memories when she was growing up. The outside water fights that ended in the house, the great April fools jokes, taping of the sprayer on the kitchen sink. the surprise raw egg or plastic spiders drop from the ice maker. My surprise breakfast in bed of banana and jam sandwich. Every time I make French toast I remember the first time mixing the eggs and lifting the fork saying it looks like snot. We still have a little snicker.
She has such a big heart, raising two orphan squirrels she found, and rehabilitated them back into the wildlife.
We camp together and she is the official leach and tick remover, still to date.
Now she’s grown and raising a family of her own. I see she is teaching my grand kids with the same values we taught her. To love life, laugh lots and be yourself. Enjoy everyday. I was so blessed to be at the birth of her children. My grand kids.
She started off nestled under my heart, and she will always be there.
When I’m gone she’ll know how happy she makes me and I’ll always be in my daughters eyes.

Michelle H & Mother ***

My mom is the best for many reasons:

– she’s a single parent who is very loving and caring; always going that extra mile to help my brother, sister and I out with various aspects of our lives (everything from helping type up school projects on a typewriter back in elementary school, to encouraging me to achieve my goal of becoming a Biologist)

– even though our budget was tight, she promised and eventually took me to Disneyland – surprising me when I was 18 years old with a suitcase at my bedroom door (meeting Mickey Mouse with her was truly priceless)

– although she’s an accountant, she raised tropical fish as a hobby with me growing up (I went on to complete my degree in Biology). We bred freshwater fish and even had 14 aquariums in our basement – all because I wanted to save the baby fish that were being born

– she’s a great role model and always taught me to be polite, work hard and give back to the community. She also taught me the importance of helping others in need and having a positive attitude in life. She even helped me nurse some baby birds back to health – ones that were injured were often brought by neighbours to our house, as I was known as the ‘neighbourhood bird whisperer’.

Thanks so much for this opportunity to win. We really appreciate it!

Congratulations to you all! We will send you the details by email but you have all won a professional, toxic-free makeover with Kristen from Pure Anada Cosmetics, Mini Manicures with Pure Anada’s new line of  Nail Polishes, Gift Bags with green goodies from Generation Green, Pure Anada, Gift certificates from The Forks Market & more!  We can’t wait to pamper you & help you celebrate the wonderful bond of mother & daughter.
